Travel - Washington DC - City Segway Tours

June 14th, 2008 by travel

When I saw a group of middle-aged men and women in biking helmets but no bikes the other day in downtown Washington DC I thought it was just a group that was walking too fast.

But their limbs were not moving at all. In fact they looked like some statues transported in the back of a low-riding pickup truck.

Then when I got near, my jaw dropped - they were all riding Segways, the bike-like transportation contraption that sells about five grand a piece.

At a closer scrutiny I also realized that this was an organized group, with a leader up front, explaining the various landmarks as they cruised along silently and effortlessly, each feeling a bit self-conscious perched on their unusual mode of transportation.

What I witnessed was the City Segway Tours, a company offering 3-4 hour long tours of the downtown for $70 a pop. What an idea. I understand they hold similar tours in Atlanta, Budapest, Chicago, New Orleans, Paris and Vienna as well.

I think it is a very interesting way to see the White House, National Archives, Washington Monument, Capitol building, and a half a dozen world-class museums right there on the mall within a few hours.

Try to do all that on foot, you’ll be so tired you won’t be able to walk the next day.

And try to do the same with a car, you’ll go crazy because there are no parking spots readily available in downtown DC (visitors, beware!).

Thus a Segway sounds like a happy medium in between that provides both speed and ease of navigation in congested but worth-to-see downtown DC. Smart idea indeed.

Next time you are visiting the nation’s capital, check out the Segway crowd.

Travel - Washington DC - Ride the Circulator Bus

May 29th, 2008 by travel

Washington DC is a grand old marvelous town chock full of monuments, museums and amazing historical sites to see and appreciate.

But Washington DC also has a monster of a problem that the residents and frequent visitors are very familiar with and the first-time visitors don’t know anything about - parking.

There are no enough parking spaces in downtown DC for you to park your car and enjoy the day.
There are no enough parking spaces in downtown DC for you to park your car and enjoy the day.
There are no enough parking spaces in downtown DC for you to park your car and enjoy the day.

Did I stress that enough?

But, to its credit, the DC government came up with a great solution! The Circulator Bus System. For only $1 (one dollar) a day you can really go from one end of the DC to another and see pretty much everything there is to see in the most touristic section of the town, and do it in a comfortable air-conditioned coach.

The Circulator has three main routes, and all intersect with one another so that you can get off from one and hope on the other.

One main route covers the west-east axis, the all-important Mall area and the Smithsonian museums, with the Washington Monument on one end and the US Capitol on the other.

The second ring-route covers the north-south axis, from the Waterfront in the south all the way up to the DC Convention Center in north.

The third route covers the K Street corridor, the business district of DC. That’s where you’ll also find a lot of fine hotels to stay.

You can make your payments in Cash, or through SmartTrip card, ticket from a multi-space meter. Metro transfer and passes are also accepted.

Next time you are in DC, don’t hesitate. Take the Circulator and circulate.

Travel - Ocean City, Maryland - Fun Things To Do

April 27th, 2008 by travel

If you are bored in Ocean City, Maryland you will probably be bored anywhere and everywhere.

Think of a delicate and narrow bacon-strip of land sandwiched in between the Atlantic Ocean and a necklace of interconnected bays… a strip 150 city blocks long!

And jam packed with more touristic attractions, hotels, motels, restaurants, mini-golf clubs, beaches, bars, and attractions than you can count…

Hang on to your wallet and get that camera ready because you’re in Ocean City.

Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum is in Ocean City (OC). Bizarre exhibits and truly weird stuff to marvel at for the whole family.

I like Slide & Ride on the 65th street. Cool crazy splashing entertainment with water slides, shooting gallery, mini-golf and (yes) “Water Wars”!

There are all kinds of bike, boat, motorcycle (Harley!), and even parasailing rentals.

More miniature golf establishments than you can count, for all the Tiger Wood’s of the future.

Enough private medical centers and clinics to take care of all the sunburn and sun shock cases.

Dining in OC is an experience that won’t leave you wanting. From a dollar-a-slice pizza joints and French Fry factories on the Magnificent Boardwalk to quality dining establishments, they are all there. Pick your spot and enjoy a gourmet break any time of the day.

OC is cool, fun, fantastic but with a drawback - it’s habit forming. Watch out!
